When the absence of an event causes some outcome, it is instance omissive causation. For instance, not eating lunch may cause you to be hungry. Recent psychological proposals concur that mind represents causal relations, including through mental simulation, but they disagree on form simulation. One theory states people represent as force vectors; another omissions are representations contrasting counterfactual simulations; a third argues think about by representing sets iconic possibilities – models in piecemeal fashion. In this paper, we tease apart empirical predictions three theories and describe experiments run counter two them. Experiments 1 2 show reasoners can infer temporal relations from pattern contravenes theory. Experiment 3 asked participants list consistent with found tended particular privileged first, most often, faster than alternative possibilities. The model theory, inconsistent contrast hypothesis. We marshal evidence explain why helps solve long-standing debate how omissions.
